Edward James ('E.J.') Smith was Captain of the Titanic, and the senior captain of the White Star Line. He was in command during the disaster and oversaw all of the emergency procedures for evacuation, distress signalling and the safe shutting down of the ship's coal-fired engines, to prevent boiler explosion.
Tragically, the voyage was to have been Smith's final one before his retirement- he died in the disaster, probably going down with the ship, although some survivors report having recognised hearing his voice after the liner sank asking if there was any room left in one of the boats. "Hang on to what you have, old man" one passenger replied, "One more person would sink us all". "That's alright, boys" came the reply, "Good Luck, and God Bless you all". Nobody can be sure that this was Captain Smith, but by all accounts it did sound remarkably like him. At all events, his body was never found- his heavy woollen sea uniform and boots would quickly have become waterlogged and weighed him down, causing him to sink.
Captain Smith was 62 years old and left a wife Eleanore and a daughter Helen; a ststue in his memory stands in Southampton.
