My is a possessive adjective. It modifies (describes) nouns, in italics below.

My coat is brown with a hood.

A girl took my brown coat from school.

When the girl realized her mistake, the girl and her mother brought my coat to my house.

I was having my birthday party when the girl showed up, so I invited her to stay.

My new friend enjoyed the cake and ice cream.

I found out the girl's coat had been stolen, so I gave her my brown coat to wear and keep.

My mother said I made a good decision. My fatherhugged me.

My parents told my teacher about my good deed.

The word "my" is a possessive pronoun, used to show ownership or possession. It is not a part of speech on its own but can modify a noun to indicate that something belongs to the speaker.
