Sir. Walter Raleigh was an English gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, spy, and explorer who established the first settlement in Roanoke.
During the latter part of Ralegh's life King James I was King.
He was an explorer, writer, English pirate ( as far as the Spanish were concerned) and part of the English court.
Sir Walter Raleigh organized expeditions to explore the New World in the late 16th century. One of his most notable expeditions was in 1585 to Roanoke Island, which is now part of North Carolina, in the United States.
