The central volcanic group in the North Island, has three volcanoes, Ruapehu, Tongariri and Ngaruahoe. The downwind (east) of these used to be known as the Rangipo Desert. And further to the east again, was the Kaingaroa Desert, now known as the Kaingaroa forest. Both of these deserts were created by ash from the volcanic group.
