Hidden by default in the name is the file format/extension after the "."
If visual enabled, changing the letters after the . also change the program booted and may make the file unusable. Also adding a . in the name if visual enabled may make the file unusable. Often people unaware of this have changed the name from name.doc to MyDiary and can't open the file. Easily add the.doc back and you'll be fine.
You may hide or unhide this function in the explorer folder settings, accessible in any open file's window.
