"To be" is most commonly a linking verb. This is a verb that connects the subject with the predicate nominative or the predicate adjective.

Examples:

  • I am hungry.
  • You are a person.
  • She is lonely.
  • "To be" is most commonly a linking verb.

You can always tell a verb is a linking verb if you could replace it with the word "equals". In the sentence "You are a person" You equals a person. Other linking verbs generally have to do with senses, like "This flower smells sweet" or "That sounds good".

"Be" is also used as an auxiliary verb. When coupled with a present participle, forms of "be" create the progressive tenses. When used with a past participle, the passive voice is created.

Examples:

  • I was jumping on the couch when I fell and broke my arm. (past progressive)
  • The window was broken by the thief. (passive voice)

To be can also mean "to exist". The famous Cartesian phrase "I think therefore I am" means "I think therefore I exist". In this case, it cannot have an object.

"Being" can be either a noun or a verb. As a noun, "being" means a tangible object, often a living one. "Being" is the present participle form of the verb "be", and like most other present participles, it can be used in a sentence as a noun (gerund) or as an adjective or adverb by itself or to introduce a an adjective or adverbial clause.
