The four goals of the criminal justice system are to discourage and deter people from committing crimes, protect society from dangerous and harmful people, punish people who have committed crimes and rehabilitate and reform people who have committed crimes.
Rehabilitation focuses on reforming offenders through education, therapy, and support to prevent future criminal behavior. Punishment seeks to penalize offenders for their crimes through consequences like incarceration or fines. Rehabilitation aims to address the root causes of criminal behavior, while punishment is more focused on enforcing consequences.
Criminal law refers to the body of laws that relate to crimes, their prosecution, and their punishment. An example sentence could be: "The suspect was charged with a serious offense under criminal law and will stand trial in court."
