The autonomic nervous system is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
It regulates heart activity, acting like brakes and accelerators to decrease or increase the heart rate.

A good example is the baroreflex. Pressure sensors signal to the nervous system to increase venous return when we go from lying to standing.
