An alcohol lamp is one designed to burn alcohol rather than oil. The wick on it is typically but not always round rather than flat.
No, surgical spirits should not be used in a spirit lamp. Surgical spirits are typically used for disinfection, cleaning, and sterilization purposes and are not meant to be used as a fuel source in a spirit lamp. Instead, the appropriate fuel sources for a spirit lamp are denatured alcohol or methylated spirits.
Spirits, of course. Hence the name. (I'm not being metaphysical here; by "spirits" I mean "ethylated spirits" or "methylated spirits", aka "booze" or "wood alcohol".) You could also burn rubbing alcohol in them, but this won't work as well since most rubbing alcohol is about 30% water ... which of course doesn't burn.
we use mercury lamp instead of ordinary lamp because ordinary lamp has many wavelengths when mercury lamp has single wavelength so in constant deviation we use only mercury lamp.
This is a lamp using alcohol as fuel.

The alcohol lamp is generally used during excursions, but can be used sometimes in a laboratory for heating when another source of heating is not available. Alcohol is the fuel for heating.

an alcohol lamp is not better than the Bunsen burner, which can make a flame more higher and stronger.. Because alcohol lamp is used to flame and can burn the environment arround you. Bunser burner is more unique than the alcohol lamp. This alcohol lamp is very dangerous when not use properly. When an alcohol lamp is lighting or it flames, use the cover to prevent it and make the flame be gone for an instant without harming yourself or the objects around you cannot be destroyed.>>>>m.j (14)use to contain a chemical in a cylinder flask.d q alam kung tama to? haha pki improve nalang po :)m.j (14)
Often alcohol lamps were used in laboratories to heat liquids and chemicals. The flame given off is not very incandescent, it gives off little light. Bunsen burners are used today.
Alcohol lamps are usually found in Biology labs where they do innoculations of bacteria cultures. It heats the wire loop on a stick that they use to spread the bacteria on the growth medium, which will prevent contamination to the cultures. They are more portable than Bunsen burners but burn at a lower temperature. Note* I haven't seen these around in a long time, and with the common use of disposable plastic innoculators, they might not be that common anymore. Alcohol lamp-serves as a source of heat for laboratory activity.
