Not all antibodies can cross the P.B. only IgG antibody can pass through it. Many drugs cant also pass through and they are save to be used during pregnancy. RBCs cant pass either (maternal and fetal blood never should never mix).

What does it mean to say most biological membranes are selectively permeable?

Selectively permeability is a property of biological membranes that allows them to regulate the passage of substances across them. In spite of heavy traffic through them, cell membranes are selectively permeable, and substances do not cross the barrier indiscriminately.

How does scabies affect a pregnant woman and her baby?

No. Scabies is a dermal (skin) disease caused by mites. While small, they are much larger than other types of infectious agents, and cannot enter the bloodstream. In any event, there is a placental blood barrier between the mother and fetus, which blocks most organisms. A scabies mite cannot pass through this barrier. Newborn infants should receive treatment if they are exposed during birth. (For treatment of scabies, see the related link)
