Who caused the fall of Israel?

The Assyrians destroyed Israel in 722 BCE and scattered the people throughout their empire, where the former Israelites assimilated the local cultures and religion, and lost their separate ethnic identity. The Assyrians renamed Israel as Samaria and brought people from other parts of their empire into Samaria.

Rehoboam's father, King Solomon, had levied relatively heavy taxes, which had been used for such large-scale endeavors as building the First Temple. After Solomon's death, the people approached his son Rehav'am (Rehoboam) and asked that he lower the taxes. He ignored the counsel of his elder advisers and refused the people's request. This led the Ten Tribes to turn away from him (1 Kings ch.12).The background reason was because King Solomon had been less than perfectly righteous. This led God to punish him by diminishing his dynasty in the lifetime of his son (Rehoboam). 1 Kings ch.11.

According to the Book of Kings, the United Monarchy of Israel fell as a result of the unwise rule and swingeing taxes of King Solomon, a policy that his son Jeroboam vowed to continue. As a result, the larger and more prosperous northern part of the country seceded from his rule, but somehow kept the national name of 'Israel'.

However, scholars dispute whether there ever was a United Monarchy, as described in The Bible. Israel Finkelstein says that Israel and Judah were always separate, with different life styles, different pottery, different myths and legends, and even speaking different dialects of Hebrew. On this evidence, there was no fall of a 'United Monarchy'.
