Louis XIV was motivated to build his palace at Versailles primarily to consolidate his power and control over the French nobility. By relocating the royal court to Versailles, he aimed to create a grand and opulent environment that would reflect his absolute authority and divine right to rule. The palace also served as a means to distract and keep the nobility close, reducing their power and influence in their own regions.
