Many foods are toxic or dangerous to birds. Some foods are obviously unhealthy for them while other things they cannot eat will surprise people.

The seeds of apples contain tiny traces of cyanide, so you should always de-seed apples before feeding to birds.

Avocado, onions, garlic, mushrooms, leafy parts of tomatoes, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate and salt are toxic to birds and will poison them.

Apricot seeds, bitter almonds, coriander, curry powders, eggplant leaves, English Ivy, fava beans, lily, lily-of-the-valley, marigold, milkweed, mistletoe berries, nightshade, nectarine seeds, peace lily, plum seeds, poison ivy, poppies, rhubarb leaves, shamrock, tobacco (including breathing in second-hand smoke), tulips and yew will also cause health issues in birds depending on their species. It is best to avoid feeding all of the above to birds.

Of course, any human food should never be fed to birds either. Human foods are high in salts and sugars, which birds do not need. Bear in mind that birds are smaller than humans, so it takes a lot less to either harm them or kill them. Always make sure your bird has a balanced and healthy diet.
