Sucrose: C12H22O11

Formula Weight: 342.3

Carbon: 12 * 12.01 g/mol = 144.12

144.12/342.3 = 42.10% Carbon

You can always check the other elements to double check:

Hydrogen: 22*1 = 22

22/342.3 = 6.4% Hydrogen

Oxygen: 11*16.01 = 176.11

176.11/342.3 = 51.44% Oxygen

-first calculate the relative molecular mass (RMM) of glucose

12(6)+1(12)+16(6)= 180

-then the RMM of 6 molecules of carbon

12x6=72

- calculate the percentage

72/180= 0.4 and multiply by 100 to get 40%

Glucose has a molar mass of 180g/mol, and we arrive at this figure by adding up the atomic masses of all its constituent atoms. Carbon accounts for 72 of these 180g (12x6), so 72/180 = 0.4, which is 40%.

Is sucrose a compound or a element?

Sucrose is not an element itself, but it is made up of a mixture of elements. Sucrose is actually a compound and is, what we know, table sugar.

What elements are found in the compound sucrose?

Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

How do you know that sucrose contains carbon?

The chemical composition is determined by chemical analysis.

Does carbon and sucrose share the same properties?

Carbon is an element. Sucrose, a sugar, is a compound ( a combination of elements ). Sucrose is composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Pure carbon is found in two forms, graphite (pencil lead) and diamond. Carbon and sucrose are very different in properties except for the fact that both can be burned in the presence of oxygen to yield CO2 (and water in the case of sucrose).

An example of a compound drink is alcohol because it is made of carbon and hydroxyl group products which include glucose and sucrose.

What is the atomic number for sucrose?

Sucrose is a compound, not an element and so does not have an atomic number. It is composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen which have the atomic numbers 6, 1, and 8 respectively.
