Apple OS is originally derived from a BSD-Unix version. Apple dit never "invented" an Operating System. Apple OS is very much the same layout as many Linux distributions (or vice-versa)...
OK, I think about 4% of (classical) computer users use Apple OS. About 70% use Windows, the rest are various systems, where over half of it (12%) are Linux distributions. Yes, Linux is growing, and faster than most people think.
In the tablet and smartphone market, Apple once had about 100%, but since Google Android (= Linux), their share has dropped under the 40% in number of users. And it wil drop even more, as soon as Microsoft will appear.
Smart people.
Apple computers and printers technically may have a better and more advanced selection, but companies like Microsoft offer more user friendly computers for everyday people. Apple computers are more for the business or office use.

Apple computers are good for hardware, better software and graphics quality is really good.
Apple computers are made by Apple. Apple write their own operating system called Mac OS X to use on their computers. Legally you can only run Mac OS X on a computer made by Apple. Other makes of computer cannot be turned into Apple computers.
Of those computers in use in 2011, 100% are used.
