Australian opal is the finest opal known and is exported around the world. It's safe to say that even the smallest gem and jewelry store in the smallest towns of the developed world will carry some Australian opal.

Australia produces 90% of the world's opals. Opals have also been mined in Ethiopia, the United States, Brazil, and Mexico, and other locations. Some of the finest opals ever found have been recovered in the Virgin Valley area of Nevada, USA. Several mines allow gem hunters the opportunity to dig their own gems for a small fee. The most productive mines in the Virgin Valley area are the Royal Peacock, Bonanza, Rainbow Ridge, Opal Queen, and WRT Stonetree/Black Beauty Mines.
