When Gauguin went to Tahiti he hoped to find a pure society that was untouched by Western culture, unfortunately that's not what he found. However, he sought out what he envisioned as authentic native culture and painted it. The desire in his art was to show traditional Tahitian culture.
He was influenced by van Gogh and Cézanne. No, it is actually the other way around: van Gogh was influenced by Gauguin. Gauguin, however, was very much influenced by Emile Bernard.
