You will be able to create dogs, cats, and horses in CAP (create a pet). There are different kinds of small animals such as turtles, hamsters, or snakes that you can buy or have your CAP pets find. Although the CAP pets are the only ones you can control. There are animals you can spot out in the wild but can not keep as well. The only animal you can find out in the wild and control is the unicorn. You must befriend the unicorn first though. That's basically all I know.
By the way Sims 3 Pets will be released October 18, 2011 for North America.
