Peyer's patches are lymphoid follicles located in the wall of the small intestine. They are similar to the tonsils, they 1) destroy bacteria, preventing them from breaching the wall of the small intestine (which is technically "outside" the body) and entering the bloodstream. 2) the generate memory lymphocytes for long term immunity.
