Jean Jacques Rousseau is known for his famous work called "The Social Contract" published in 1762. Thorough a social contract, an entire society agrees to be governed by its general will. Individuals who wish instead to follow their own self-interests must be forced to abide by the general will.

Rousseau also viewed women as being "naturally" different from men. To him, women should be educated for their roles as wives and mothers by learning obedience, and nurturing skills that would enable them to provide loving care for their husbands and children. However, not everyone in the 18thC agreed with what he said.

Most men saw themselves more important than women, there was no equal rights. But until the eighteenth century, female thinkers began to express their ideas about improving the condition of women.

- Mary Wollstonecraft is considered to be the founder of the European and American movements for women right's.

- All in all, Rousseau published "the social contract" but he didn't seem to agree that women and men were equal.

The philosopher who inspired the ideas of all men being created equal and the adoption of a social contract is john Locke. In his influential work "Two Treatises of Government," Locke argued that individuals possess natural rights to life, liberty, and property, and that they create societies and governments through a social contract to protect these rights. His ideas had a significant impact on the development of democratic principles and the formation of modern liberal democracies.
