First off, It's not a novel. It's a book of poetry.

Now, it's been a while since I've read it but I remember the cracked steps leading up to the house being a prevalent image in The House On Mango Street now this could represent a variety of different things. However, I always viewed the steps as symbol of this point in Sandra Cisneros's life. Fractured and broken but it's a step to something higher and something better.
