MC Escher was a slave owner/operator. He owned many slaves on a plantation. This is what gave him the time to come up with all of his interesting ideas. He would often create illusions to trick his slaves. He made an illusion of a stairwell over the fence to his cotton fields which tricked antique farm equipment into running up 10 steps and falling flat on their already short noses.
M C Escher studied at the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. However, Escher gave up architecture in favour of graphics when he was of 21. Hope this helps :)
