Québec had been under siege for some months before the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. General Wolfe's overall strategy seems to have been simply to draw General Montcalm out of his fortifications into battle and rely on his smaller but superior forces. He had made a number of attempts to coax Montcalm out, without success. The plan to land upriver of Québec might have been intended in part to cut Montcalm's supply lines from Montréal as a further inducement to fight. No-one seems to know why he should have landed at L'Anse au Foulon specifically. It seems to have been a last-minute decision and entailed great risk given that it is at the base of a cliff and was directly under enemy guns.
