I'm not aware of any planet John Herschel helped to discover. Obviously it could only be Neptune, but I don't think he was involved in that discovery.
Perhaps your getting him mixed up with John Couch Adams.

Of course. Our ability to explore, research, discover... in fact do anything can only be hampered if our start point is a sick planet. This is true of anything in life. The degree to which we do anything is predicated by our own health, and the likelihood of success is improved considerably when we, ourselves, are in good shape. On the other hand, exploring space and other planets can help us learn about our own planet and therefore possibly help us fix it.
