Venus is called the Evening Star when it is in that part of its orbit where it is catching the Earth up, because it takes only 225 days to go round; and it comes close to Earth. Because it is east of the Sun on the ecliptic, it sets after the Sun, so that's why it's called the Evening Star and is very bright.

A few weeks later after inferior conjuction when it has overtaken us, it's on the other side of the Sun, on the west side, so it rises before the Sun and is called the Morning Star.
