Shield volcanoes are found along divergent plate boundaries where two plates pull apart and lava flows into the gap to form a volcano.
Shield volcanoes are also formed at hot spots. A hot spot is an area of persistent volcanic activity. Hot spots originate at unusually hot areas of the mantle-core boundary. Overlying mantle melts forming plumes of magma that rise and penetrate the crust forming volcanoes. Hawaii, Iceland, and Yellowstone are examples of hot spots. The trace of a hot spot appears as a chain, such as an island chain. As the overlying plate moves one volcano off the hot spot, another is formed. The Hawaiian Island Chain is an example.
Shield volcanoes can be found in any setting where magma can reach the surface, but most are found on oceanic plates. They are usually situated on hot spots, such as Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Since hot spots are not associate with plate boundaries, plate boundaries would not be important when determing locations of shield volcanoes.
I think they are formed on Convergent Boundaries
The Falcon Volcano on the Tonga Islands are in the Indo-Australian Plate- a convergent boundary.
The convergent boundary?

The cotopaxi volcano sits on the pacific plate.
Convergent plate boundary.(:
Its to do with the viscosity of the lava, the thicker (more viscous) the lava the slower and less far it will travel making a shield volcano. This happens on a constructive plate boundary. on a destructive plate boundary the lava is less viscous and runs further making a conical shaped volcano

The Volcano Villarica is on a converging plate boundary.

The cotopaxi volcano sits on the pacific plate.
It is a shield volcano, as it occurs on a divergent pllate boundary (constructive boundary)
I think the plate boundary is in the subduction zone.

El Chinchon is not a shield volcano it is a lava dome volcano. Lava dome volcanoes have a layering of lava that fans up and outward in the center.
Its a convergent boundary. The pacific plate collides with the Philippines Oceanic plate
