Andrew Jackson was a Democrat/Democrat-Republican
Andrew Jackson and his "Jacksonian" supporters began the Democratic-Republican party, which later became the Democratic Party. The party lasted it split over slavery of the eve of the Civil War. It elected four more presidents after Jackson. It has ties to the modern Democratic party which formed after the Civil War.
Andrew Jackson was with the Democrat political party. He was the 7th President of the United States from 1829 to 1837.
Andrew Jackson was a Democrat-Republican, a specific political party at the time which is not exactly the same as either the Democratic or Republican party today (the names "democratic" and "republican" have been used historically for several actually rather different political parties)
It's rather difficult to characterize him as either of today's main parties. If pressed, I'd say someone today with the same political ideals would probably be just about equally disliked by both parties, but might poll slightly better among Republicans (particularly those Republicans who aren't especially wealthy) than among Democrats. Both would probably find his stance on human rights to be basically abhorrent.

He wanted average citizens to be more involved in government decisions.

The modern Democratic Party in the US originated with the Republican Party: now referred to as the Democratic-Republican Party (1791-1825). The Democratic Party was founded in 1828. After the original Democratic-Republican Party split in 1825, those who opposed Democratic president Andrew Jackson formed the Whig Party in 1833.
After Andrew Jackson's election in 1828, his party became known as the Democratic party.
The first organized party in America was made up of the followers of Jefferson, who, starting in the 1790s, called themselves Republicans (or Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans). Hamilton and those who opposed Jefferson, kept the name Federalist. Jefferson's Republican Party has no ties to the current Republican Party. In fact, the current Democratic Party considerers Jefferson and Andrew Jackson as the founders of their party.

Andrew Jackson
The democratic party was created because of the presidency of Andrew Jackson. When he was running for president, he had a whole new political belief, which didn't fit the description of a federalist or a republican. So, to compromise for Jackson's odd political beliefs, he and his followers created the Democratic Party.
The Democratic Republican Party favored a limited national government. The party, formed in 1828, was led by Andrew Jackson. It is now the oldest political party in the USA.
In the United States, both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party can trace their lineage back to the first political parties. The Democratic Party traces its roots back to the Democratic-Republican Party, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1792, while the Republican Party traces its roots back to the Whig Party, which was formed in the 1830s as an opposition to Andrew Jackson's Democratic Party.
