A the start of 1997 there was a coalition of Fine Gael, the Labour Party and Democratic Left in government. This was known as the "Rainbow Coalition". In June there was a general election. As a result, there was a Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition, with the support of four independents supporting the government ensuring an overall majority.
