In reality no source of energy can be said as pollution free.

when hydro electricity is said as a cleaner source of energy it means that it is "cleaner" that some other source of energy. example: hydro electric power is cleaner that petroleum since burning of petroleum produces harmful gases but not in case of hydroelectricity

the pollution caused by hydroelectricity is the ecological imbalance . to produce hydro electricity dams are constructed. for construction the forest nearby is cleared and therefore causes soil erosions and other related problems. it causes ecological imbalance because when water from rivers are stored in dams it causes water shortage in rivers and affect marine organisms.

No. Once the hydro power plant is built, hydroelectric power is one of the cleanest forms of power generation. The process of building a plant might, depending on how it is done, cause some soil pollution.
