A lunar eclipse takes place when the sun and earth are aligned. The shadow casted from the earth when the sun's rays are direct with half of it then cover he entire moon. The thicker part of the shadow is called the umbra. The umbra is where the moon is covered completely. The penumbras are the thiner parts of the shadow spanning out larger than the moon.
