Extinction is a natural process that has happened to species since just after life appeared. However, human activity is accelerating the rate of extinction to catastrophic speeds. To slow the rate of extinction, people need to do the following on a global scale:
1. Stop habitat destruction. People can't continue to clear out forests, swamps, or any other habitats, and at least some of the habitats we have already destroyed need to be restored. Habitat destruction is one of the most important causes of extinction.
2. Stop polluting the environment. Pollution kills animals, plants, and other species both directly, through poisoning them (for example, pesticides rinsed into rivers), and indirectly (greenhouse gases causing climate change and ocean acidification).
3. Replace our use of nonrenewable resources with renewable resources, or recycle all nonrenewable resources that we need. Mining, oil drilling, and fracking for natural gas all cause major environmental damage.
