Harry Truman was the first President of the United States to hold a televised press conference in 1947. In this first appearance he was trying to gain favor for a world hunger crisis. This was not a nationwide broadcast, however. Only New York and Philadelphia actually saw it.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first president to appear on television. It happened in April of 1939 when he spoke at the opening ceremonies of the World's Fair. It was a very limited experimental broadcast. The first president to appear on national television to give an address from the White House was Harry S. Truman in 1947.
It was broadcast in Color although if you still had a black and white TV in 1966 to 1968, it was of course in black and white.
You will see him on TV every day of his term now that he is President. He is followed everywhere by the White House Press corps and a day doesn't go by that you won't see him on TV.
The building was originally referred to variously as the "President's Palace", "Presidential Mansion", or "President's House" . Adams took up residence in 1800 and it was not called the White House until around 1810. It was also called "The Executive Mansion".
