There is a notch that prevents installation, even though the modules are the same size and have the same number of pins.
Notch position between DDR and DDR2 are diferent. Also, the memory socket on a motherboard is diferent for all types of memories. If the memory socket is design for DDR you can't put any other memory type but DDR and so for all other types.
The slots are slightly skewed in different positions
THAT WRONG! its the nothes that prevent the DIMM from going into the wrong slot
page 223 table 5-1
Notches on the RAM stick will keep the stick from being installed into the wrong slot
A DDR DIMM has 184 pins, while a DDR2 DIMM has 240 pins. They will physically only fit in slots designed specifically for them and are not interchangeable.
dimms must be equal matched in size, speed and features
Having it in backwards, or having some kind of obstruction in the DIMM slot.
the notches
Memory Ram
A DDR2 memory stick cannot be installed correctly in a DDR slot.
I just put a PC2 6400 in the slot that had DDR2 533. The motherboard beeped when I turned the computer on. This beeping is an indication that the memory is not installed. Therefore in my case the answer is no.
This is impossible to do without physically breaking the DDR socket. If you did manage to do this you're going to need to buy a new motherboard and ram. You probably shouldn't be building your own computer.
well ofciurse it will lol
ddr1 and ddr2
The two communicate in different ways, so they are incompatible software-wise. They are also physically incompatible due to a different pin arrangement, different notch locations, and different voltages.
The Slot layout.
Dual-channel architecture requires a dual-channel-capable motherboard and two or more DDR, DDR2 SDRAM, or DDR3 SDRAM memory modules. The memory modules are installed into matching banks, which are usually color-coded on the motherboard.
Unfortunately not. DDR has a different amount of pins compared to a stick of DDR II. Also the slot position is slightly different. Hope this helps Be Safe Cadishead Computers
the different notch positions keep someone from installing a DDR DIMM or DDR2 DIMM in the wrong memory slot.
You cannot convert an existing motherboard to DDR2. As The Intel Pentium D was actually designed for motherboards with DDR2 RAM (you must have gone out of your way to purchase one with DDR RAM), it should be no problem to move the processor to another board.
