There were many problems. For instance, the 104 men who settled Jamestown in 1607 chose a site that was the worse in the area. They picked an area that was swampy, had bad water, and the land was poor. They were also not prepared to grow crops or to do much beyond searching for gold in an area where there was none. Over 8,000 Native Americans were the area as well. Within six months only 34 of the 107 men were still alive. The Plymouth colony arrived at the start of winter and they landed off course. They found a Native American camp that had been left because the people had died from a New World disease. They were lucky to find the hidden corn supply so they could plant the crop. When people arrived in the New World they arrived in a land where there were no stores, no houses, no fences, no area that they really understood. They left a Old World to settle in a New World they didn't understand and brought old world ways with them. Slowly they changed this world to look like the one they had left.
