Harold hardrada was a Norwegian king who fancied being king of England. He invaded, and had some success in the north. In September 1066 the then king of England (Harold II) defeated him in the north. The king's army was much weakened by the battle, but had to rush back to southern England to face William of Normandy. William won the battle of Hastings and he became William I of England.

King Harold then had to march South to face William of Normandy, and was killed at Hastings. William then became King, and his successors have been on the throne ever since.
