overheating , or blow a radiador hose if stuck closed. if stuck open wont really do nothin but eat antifreeze muhhahahahaha it just opens to save your engine from gettin too hot
No coolant in the system, failed thermostat, failed water pump, leaky headgasket.
Code 17 is engine cold too long. The normal cause is a failed thermostat.

Running it while leaking can cause it to overheat repeatedly, which can cause thermostat damage , along with other problems.

Most likely cause is a failed engine thermostat.
A stuck open thermostat will cause a car to run cooler than needed. It will cause oil to sludge, a loss of gas mileage due to running rich and numerous other problems.
Sounds like you have a thermostat fault. A failed or slow to open thermostat would cause temperature to rise to quickly. It shouldn't rise too fast.

You don't. You replace a thermostat that has failed. They are meant to be replaced.
