We believe that there was a vast nebula of drifting gas and dust; hydrogen floating freely in space that had existed since the Big Bang, mixed in with dust and assorted mass blasted out of the remnants of exploded stars from eons before. Something caused the cloud to begin to contract; perhaps its own intrinsic gravity, although modern cosmologists claim that a stable nebula will not collapse under gravity; there has to be some external force to cause this.

So perhaps the gas cloud was hit with the shock wave of a "nearby" supernoval explosion; in any case, the nebula began to collapse under its own gravity. Minor motions within the gas cloud would have caused it to begin spinning as it collapsed.

As the cloud condensed, the spin became greater and greater, in accordance with the law of conservation of angular momentum.
