Dmitri Mendeleev discovered the Periodic Table from the attempts to systematize properties of the elements.He arranged the elements in to eight groups and twelve rows.
Dmitri Mendeleev constructed the periodic table of elements in 1869 based on atomic mass( which is how much an atom weighs). this however was changed many many years later resulting in our current design of the periodic table which is based on atomic number instead.( the number of protons in an atom.)
It took many years to discover these elements. Hundreds of thousands worked and arranged the Periodic Table of Elements.The basic design of the periodic table was thought up by Dmitri Mendeleev. It was his idea to arrange the elements according to atomic mass (because this gave repeating patterns of properties). Later it was discovered that atomic charge was what was really important. Eventually the gaps Mendeleev left were filled in by the discovery of more elements, so while many scientist contributed to the modern periodic table Mendeleev is considered to have invented it.
Dmitri was the guy's first name. He was actually Mendeleev. Basically, he noticed that some elements happened to have similar properties to some other elements and that these elements could be arranged in a logical way in a table. OK, so there were gaps, but as time passed these gaps (which really were predictions that there were as-yet undiscovered elements) became filled.
Mendeleev designed the periodic table by increasing atomic mass. But it was later changed to increasing atomic number.

In 1913, Henry Moseley published the results of his measurements of wavelengths of the X-ray spectral lines of a number of elements. This showed the ordering of the wavelengths of the X-ray emissions of the elements coincided with the ordering of the elements by atomic number, and not atomic mass. Also, further evidence has been shown with the large discovery and use of isotopes of the elements, the periodic law as Mendeleev, Meyers and others had proposed arranged by atomic mass, instead demonstrated that the properties of the elements varied according to their atomic number.
A chemist called Dmitri Mendeleev created the best way of arranging all the chemical elements- the modern periodic table. He arranged the elements based on their groups, e.g group 1 = alkali metals etc. Protons and nuclei hadn't been observed in his day, so any estimations and predicted elements needed to be clarified in the future. Mendeleev's predictions were accurate- hence his legendary table still exists today. I just hope I've spelt his name correctly!
