How is nuclear energy in stars?
Stars obtain energy through the majority of their lives by the process of thermonuclear fusion of the nuclei of light elements to produce nuclei of heavier elements. Initially the processes fuses hydrogen nuclei, producing helium nuclei (similar to what hydrogen bombs do), but the process ceases when it produces nickel and iron nuclei at which point the star begins dying as it has run out of nuclear fuel.

Nuclear fission is the splitting of heavy nuclei (as U-235) when bombarded by neutrons. The nuclear fusion is the combination of light nuclei into heavier nuclei. Both the nuclear fission and nuclear fusion result in loss of mass (or mass defect) that transforms into energy according to formula E = mc2 (c is light velocity).
How does the sun produce heat and light energy?
The suns heat is transfered into light energy. The chemicals from the sun produce the heat and light you see coming from the sun. ================ The sun's energy is produced in the process of nuclear fusion deep in its core ... a process that can only happen under incredible temperature and pressure. It's a nuclear process, not a chemical one. The nuclei of hydrogen atoms are forced to 'fuse' and form nuclei of helium, which liberates energy in the process. We've been able to initiate this process on Earth, but so far, unfortunately, the only successful application of it has been in 'thermonuclear' weapons.

When fireflies light up, they are producing a chemical reaction within their bodies called bioluminescence. This production of light is the result of oxygen combining with calcium and the chemicals adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and luciferin in the presence of the enzyme luciferase. Without the bioluminescent enzyme luciferase, the light could not be produced.
