The election of Lincoln is what prompted them to secede. When he was elected the southern states thought he would pass a federal law making slavery illegal, so they separated before he could do it. To Lincoln it became a States rights issue and he was determined to keep the union together.

After US President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to end the armed rebellion of the Southern slave states, other slave states felt threatened. They knew Lincoln and the Republican Party was anti-slavery. The four states of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas, sought the protection of the new Confederacy.
