Prophase is a stage of mitosis in which the chromatin condenses into a highly ordered structure called a chromosome (it is at this stage giemsa staining can be applied to elicit G-banding in chromosomes) in which the chromatin becomes visible. This process, called chromatin condensation, is mediated by the condensin complex. Since the genetic material has been duplicated in an earlier phase of the cell cycle, there are two identical copies of each chromosome in the cell. Identical chromosomes, called sister chromatids, are attached to each other at a DNA element present on every chromosome called the centromere.

The phase where two new nuclear envelopes form around the two sets of daughter chromosomes is called telophase. In telophase, the nuclear membrane reforms around the chromosomes and the nucleoli reappear. This marks the end of nuclear division in cell mitosis.
Chemical energy does not change into nuclear energy. Chemical energy is associated with the bonds between atoms in molecules, whereas nuclear energy is associated with changes in the nucleus of an atom, such as nuclear fission or fusion.
