What protects fishes from Bacteria?

There are good bacteria and there are bad bacteria. Without some good bacteria being present, your filter will not work the way it should and your fish will always be unhealthy. To protect themselves from most of the nasty bacteria present in water, fish have a "slime coating" that works as a barrier to many things that may harm them. That is the reason fish should not be handled more than is absolutely neccessary. Touching a fish often removes some of the slime and makes the fish vulnerable to attack.
