There have been various theories about Van Gogh's mental state, there has even been mention of a possible brain tumour. But it does seem to come down to the fact that he suffered from a severe form of bipolar mood disorder. He certainly had so many of the symptoms, and eventually committed suicide. Much has been written about Van Gogh and his behaviour, and many bipolar sufferers, including myself, can see the signs.
