There is no specific term for a psychologist who treats schizophrenia. A psychologist who treats schizophrenia may specialize in cognitive-behavioral therapy or medication interactions.

The professional who would most often treat schizophrenia is a psychiatrist; however, psychiatrists are not psychologists.

Both psychologists and psychiatrists can treat schizophrenia and commonly do so together. Psychiatry primarily treats a patient with pharmacotherapy while a psychologist will focus on psychotherapy.

There is great evidence based research (Patricia Bach and Steven C. Hayes 2002) that has looked at the use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to prevent the rehospitalization of psychotic patients. Their research showed that patients who received ACT therapy for their psychosis had reduced hospitalization rates as compared to those that received their normal treatment.

There is no specialist who specifically treats schizophrenia. A psychiatrist would treat mental disorders in general, and would be the most likely to treat schizophrenia.
