I am not sure what the purpose of the stapes are but i know that they are one of the innermost smaller bones in our body and they are shaped somewhat like a stirrup.
I'm guessing that the stapes vibrate against the cochlea. :)
It is done to treat progressive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis, a condition in which spongy bone hardens around the base of the stapes.
The stapes or stirrup is the small bone in the middle ear.
The stapedius muscle is attached to the stapes. It is the smallest striated muscle in the human body.
STAPES
The oval window sits immediately behind the stapes, in the middle ear.
The malleus, incus and stapes are the smallest bones in the human body. Collectively they are the three auditory ossicles of the middle ear. Their purpose is to amplify and transmit the sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the oval window.tympanic side = malleus or hammermiddle = incus or anviloval window side = stapes or stirrup
