Several purposes are served by compulsory education. First, the voters can read, write, and understand political arguments. In a democratic system, it is necessary that the voters understand the issues and vote appropriately. Second, children are kept out of the work force. This is somewhat a safety issue, but it also has the tendency to raise wages across the board, since adults in the workforce need a living wage. It also assures that when people are older and enter the workforce, they are capable of understanding more abstract concepts and they can read and write. Third, there is a higher standard of living overall, since wages are higher and workers are less likely to be injured or taken advantage of, since they are better educated and somewhat older than they would be without the compulsory education law.
