The purpose I would set is to learn about someone else's life. I would want that purpose for maybe doing a research paper.

I would set the purpose of gaining insight into the life and experiences of the individual in the biography. Biographies offer a unique opportunity to learn from someone else's journey, their successes, failures, and the lessons they have learned along the way.
