A director, as in "Board of Directors", needs only what qualifications the corporation requires. They are selected primarily for the following reasons:
1. Willingness to vote in accordance with the person or block that appointed them.
2. Willingness to maintain a reputation of security and responsibility.
3. Willingness to have good ideas as to how to grow the corporation.

At least a BA in what you are going into, you will most likely need a masters. A PhD will just get you there faster and give you a leg up. The main thing is experience with at least five years to ten years or more before you become a managing director.

It really depends on the company, their duties and what your qualifications of "higher" are. If you mean higher as in pay then usually the VP. If you mean higher as in responsibilties and decision making then it's usually the director.
