The Church Fathers of the second century sought to attribute the most probable authors to the four New Testament gospels, which had all been written anonymously. They felt that the disciple Matthew would have been an educated man and, being a follower of Jesus, would have been familiar with the life and mission of Jesus. They therefore attributed to him the gospel now known as the Gospel of Matthew.
Modern New Testament scholars say that the Gospel could not have been written by an eyewitness to the life and mission of Jesus. On this view, Matthew did not write the gospel that was later attributed to him.
