There are a few skills that storm chasers need to develop in order to get the most out of their hobby. The first is to learn how to monitor a VHF radio for weather alerts from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
A storm has to have attended a storm spotter and have knowledge of how storms form and how they work. Along with having knowledge of knowing how to read and understand the doppler radar and how to pick out rotation in a storm. That is the basics. If you want to be a good storm chaser like the ones seen on "Discovery Channels Storm Chasers" you also have to be able to read and understand some of the more advanced maps that show where the atmosphere will be unstable.

You don't need to take college to become a storm chaser. I do suggest attending a storm spotter class to better understand storms and tornadoes.
